Status: Past Project
Fairytale Lab was the first stage in the development of the Under the Bed project, however it is also a whole project in and of itself.
Commissioned by Leeds Central Library and further funded by the Arts Council England, Fairytale Lab saw the 154 Collective take up a weeks residency in the Libraries Arts Space (now called Room 700) to explore and develop ideas around fairytales and folklore.
Working alongside Library staff and operating an open door to the public, artists explored these themes through music, artwork and words, culminating in a visual arts exhibition that was displayed in the Arts Space for a month afterwards. Following the residency, writer Dan Mallaghan and artist Fabric Lenny then used the research and artwork that had been produced to write and illustrate a new, modern, fairytale. This book would go on to become the basis (or Bible as we called it!) for the theatre production Under the Bed.
We were invited back to the Library, as part of Leeds Light Night, to launch the finished book; turning a library room into a cardboard forest full of twinkling lights and shadowy corners, in which the public could venture through to find the books nestled in the centre for them to relax with and read. As part of this installation we also displayed some of the original artwork and (through tiny peep holes) gave glimpses of the animations that were being prepared for the theatre production as well as having live music from the play
