Under the Bed
Status: Past Project
When Alice is stolen away in the middle of the night by her mum she has no idea what is happening. Scared, confused and angry, Alice finds herself in a strange house, forbidden to leave, arguing with her mum during the day and hiding under her covers from the strange noises at night. Told using performance, live music, animation and film, Under the Bed is a compelling new play about childhood trauma and what happens when nightmares are indistinguishable from reality.
We are delighted, after the huge success and lovely responses to the production last year, that Under the Bed will be touring again in Autumn 2016 with the same creative team. Most of the dates have been finalised, but we are awaiting a couple more before publishing the full tour list. Watch this space.
Under the Bed began life as an Art Exhibition, commissioned by Leeds Central Library, exploring the origins of fairytales. Writer, Dan Mallaghan and Artist Fabric Lenny were then awarded funding to publish an illustrated storybook - based upon the exhibition - creating a new, modern, fairytale.
This theatre production has been devised by the Performers and the Creative Team, collectively; using the storybook as inspiration and working alongside experts in fairytales and childhood trauma. Under the Bed was originally commissioned by Theatre in the Mill, Bradford and ARC, Stockton and has received further support and funding from Arts Council, England, Bradford Council and The Civic, Barnsley.
